About The Book
Several years back, author and retired Westinghouse engineering manager Don Bongaards became concerned about why the United States Government did not emphasize hydrogen fuel as its primary near-term transportation fuel focus.
A Sense of Urgency offers an in-depth discussion about transportation fuel. It not only emphasizes the author’s proposed hydrogen solution, but also provides spin-off technology solutions to help solve other problems facing the world today. An all-out Apollo Moon-type effort is recommended to make the proposed solution a cost effective reality. With hydrogen fuel, made from wind and water as the centerpiece of an overall plan, Bongaards emphasizes the need for a parallel bridge program to quickly free the United States from its dependence on imported oil. Aside from the obvious need for conservation and energy efficiency, the bridge program advocates making synthetic fuel from coal, and sequestering the carbon dioxide that is produced in the process. Although T. Boone Pickens has proposed natural gas as a bridge program, Bongaards explains why this is not the best way to go.
